Global law firm Herbert Smith Freehills has partnered with Arts & Business NI and The Belfast Ensemble on a huge music project over the last 12 months and we’ve been lucky enough to be tagging along with cameras documenting the whole thing. This is the story so far.

From the very first meeting with Herbert Smith Freehills in April 2019 we were excited about this project.

Grade 1 or Bust

So 24 members of the Herbert Smith Freehills team in Belfast were given the opportunity to learn how to play a musical instrument – violin, clarinet or flute.

The Maestro Series

At the same time, members of the Senior Management team at Herbert Smith Freehills were receiving lessons in how to conduct a chamber orchestra.

There’s very little point in even trying to describe how it all went – that’s what the video is for – but it was funny, emotional, challenging, inspiring, engaging, uplifting and lots more adjectives that just escape me at the minute.

Have a look at the video to find out more about the project and the journey so far – which incidentally was called ‘Intermezzo’.

Fot those of you without a history of studying music theory (who has?) Intermezzo is described as a short dramatic performance inserted between the acts of a play.

The play in this instance being the day to day roles that the team at Herbert Smith Freehills do.

Anyway – have a look and let us know what you think.

We’ve made a lot of videos and worked on a lot of great projects (ice cream, quarries, international events and shows) but this one tops them all. This was the most fun we’ve had a work in a long time.
