UU Coleraine in 1998 with a real passion for marketing it was based on an appreciation of key marketing principles (there were only 4 P\u2019s then) and a belief in the power of great marketing to transform business performance.<\/p><p style=\"margin-bottom: 22px;\">As far as tactical marketing skills were concerned, these were learned on the job &#8211; and it\u2019s worth remembering that at this point the concept of a website was a new one, getting a mobile phone by your 25th birthday was early and social media was reading newspapers in the library.<\/p><p style=\"margin-bottom: 22px;\">Since then we\u2019ve lived through a digital revolution that, although presenting new challenges, has enhanced all of our lives in general.<\/p><p style=\"margin-bottom: 22px;\">But this digital revolution has also made the marketing landscape a lot more complex with so many individual disciplines evolving from from the development of countless digital platforms.<\/p><p style=\"margin-bottom: 22px;\">Unfortunately, what hasn\u2019t changed is how we recruit marketing people.<\/p><p style=\"margin-bottom: 22px;\">As a small business economy most companies with a marketing function will only have one person in the marketing seat.<\/p><p style=\"margin-bottom: 22px;\">At the first The Future of Marketing event in May 2018\u00a0<a style=\"color: #197dc4;\" title=\"Andi Jarvis - Eximo Marketing\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/andijarvis\/\">Andi Jarvis<\/a>\u00a0of Eximo Marketing Strategy used his presentation to look at a typical job specification for a marketing executive or marketing manager role.<\/p><p style=\"margin-bottom: 22px;\">A quick search of these will reveal that the majority of those job specifications are looking for most &#8211; if not all &#8211; of the following skills:<\/p><ul style=\"margin-bottom: 12px;\"><li>Website development and management (including CMS experience)<\/li><li>PR &amp; Communications skills<\/li><li>Events Management experience<\/li><li>Copywriting for brochure<\/li><li>Experience using Google Analytics<\/li><li>Pay Per Click Advertising experience &amp; running campaigns using Google AdWords<\/li><li>Social Media Management &amp; reporting (including paid for campaigns)<\/li><li>Scripting, storyboarding and producing video content and using video editing packages<\/li><li>Graphic design experience &#8211; InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop<\/li><li>Presentation Skills<\/li><li>CRM Management<\/li><li>Data analytics &amp; reporting<\/li><\/ul><p style=\"margin-bottom: 22px;\">To use Andi\u2019s analogy from the Future of Marketing event, these job descriptions are looking for a marketing unicorn. They are set up to fail from the outset.<\/p><p style=\"margin-bottom: 22px;\">The result is that the organisation\u2019s perception of marketing is harmed and the personal reputation of the person handed this hospital pass of a job description is damaged.<\/p><p style=\"margin-bottom: 22px;\">Not to mention to resulting dent in the personal confidence of that person which will adversely affect their performance in the next job they go to &#8211; and may even cause them to decide that marketing isn\u2019t for them.<\/p><h2 style=\"font-family: proxima-nova, -apple-system, system-ui, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, sans-serif; font-weight: bold; color: #197dc4; margin: 30px 0px 15px; font-size: 28px;\">So why does this happen?<\/h2><p style=\"margin-bottom: 22px;\">One of the consequences of the digital revolution is that marketing is now required to be much more than it ever was before in terms of the skills required for successful execution of campaigns.<\/p><p style=\"margin-bottom: 22px;\">Despite this change in the environment we still expect one person to be able to do it all. It\u2019s simply not possible and the evidence is all around us.<\/p><p style=\"margin-bottom: 22px;\">Look at the variety of agencies that now exist to help marketers address these issues on a daily basis.<\/p><ul style=\"margin-bottom: 12px;\"><li>Web development agencies<\/li><li>Design agencies<\/li><li>UX agencies<\/li><li>PPC agencies<\/li><li>PR agencies<\/li><li>Event Management companies<\/li><li>Video marketing agencies<\/li><\/ul><p style=\"margin-bottom: 22px;\">The skills required to be successful in all these disciplines are hugely different. An Events Manager is a very different person with a very different skill set to a PPC specialist. A UX architect is not the same as a PR professional.<\/p><h2 style=\"font-family: proxima-nova, -apple-system, system-ui, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, sans-serif; font-weight: bold; color: #197dc4; margin: 30px 0px 15px; font-size: 28px;\">So what\u2019s the answer?<\/h2><p style=\"margin-bottom: 22px;\">In order to find your place in the new marketing landscape it\u2019s time to choose your weapon.<\/p><p style=\"margin-bottom: 22px;\">What do your skills and personality make you best suited to?<\/p><p style=\"margin-bottom: 22px;\">Where are the best opportunities for you to advance your career.<\/p><p style=\"margin-bottom: 22px;\">Having spent almost 20 years in global marketing roles I made the decision to specialise in video a number of years ago and that led to the formation of our video marketing agency.<\/p><p style=\"margin-bottom: 22px;\">The move to individual specialisms, whether they be video, PPC, UX or PR is based on the concept of \u201cinch wide, mile deep\u201d &#8211; or put simply, rather than knowing enough to be dangerous in a whole lot of areas it\u2019s better to focus on one area and make sure you eat, sleep, breathe and live how to develop a clear strategy and execute campaigns that deliver the highest return on the marketing investment.<\/p><h2 style=\"font-family: proxima-nova, -apple-system, system-ui, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, sans-serif; font-weight: bold; color: #197dc4; margin: 30px 0px 15px; font-size: 28px;\">But what about the companies who can only afford to hire one marketing person?<\/h2><p style=\"margin-bottom: 22px;\">It\u2019s a valid question &#8211; and the answer is simple. Recruit for different skills.<\/p><p style=\"margin-bottom: 22px;\">This one person will most likely spend their time managing relationships and projects with a range of external agencies or individuals with the relevant channel skills.<\/p><p style=\"margin-bottom: 22px;\">So they don\u2019t need all the skills in the unicorn job description.<\/p><p style=\"margin-bottom: 22px;\">They need problem solving skills, project management skills, analytical skills and the ability to build relationships within the organisations that they inhabit.<\/p><p style=\"margin-bottom: 22px;\">If we recruit for these skills along with a solid understanding of marketing principles then we\u2019ll all get better results.<\/p><p style=\"margin-bottom: 22px;\">This is what our schools, higher education providers and universities are for &#8211; not for teaching people how to hack instagram as @garyvee would have you believe.<\/p><p style=\"margin-bottom: 22px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><a style=\"color: #197dc4;\" title=\"The Future of Marketing Part 3\" href=\"https:\/\/thefutureofmarketing.lpages.co\/the-future-of-marketing-part-3-belfast\/\">The Future of Marketing: Part 3<\/a>\u00a0takes place on 22nd November in Belfast.
