Getting the opportunity to interview Carl Cox was a bucket list moment for me.
So here’s how it happened…
We embarked on a project in 2021 to make a documentary about Lush! – the weekly club night that ran at Kelly’s in Portrush from 1996 to 2020.
As part of this project, BlueSky Films got the opportunity to speak to a lot of the DJs who played at Lush! regularly over the course of it’s 24 year history.
After editing the film (which launched in April 2024 at The Barn in Kelly’s we realised that we were left with a lot of really good interview footage that had not made the cut for the final film.
Since April of this year we have been going through all of the interviews with the DJs, the promoters and the clubbers who made the weekly pilgrimage to Lush!.
In September 2024 BlueSky Films set up a YouTube channel where this content would be released over the course of the next few months.
We started with Carl Cox (obviously) and his interview went live on September 20th.
The second interview we published was with Dave Dresden of San Francisco based dance music duo, Gabriel & Dresden.
They played a number of times in Lush! from 2003 until they broke up in 2008 to pursue solo projects.
Dave Dresden was visiting Northern Ireland in October 2023 to play at the annual Lush! Classical event at the SSE Arena in Belfast.
This event sees Lush! promoter, Col Hamilton, team up with Dave Seaman and Steve Anderson of Brothers in Rhythm who, in collaboration with Cliff Masterson recreate a set of dance music classics to be played with the Ulster Orchestra.

Over the course of the next few months BlueSky Film & Documentary will be releasing more of these unedited interviews with the DJs, promoters and clubbers who were part of the Lush! family for almost 24 yers.
